From what I had been hearing, folks were pretty jazzed about the Recycle Bin. In fact, in their October 2009 issue, Directions on Microsoft called the Recycle Bin “The most important new feature…”. They went on to say “This is a major improvement over existing methods…”.

So, after all the excitement, are the approval ratings of the Recycle Bin dropping faster than those of Vista? The short answer is no, at least not according to one of my favorite Linked in groups, Active Directory Administrators Group. I tend to find that the members of this group know their stuff, and the comments on this article included statements like “This feature when enabled still reduces the time taken to restore deleted objects.” So the Recycle Bin appears to be in the good graces of those who use it. It’s not perfect, but it sure does seem to be a step in the right direction.

Here at NetIQ, we’ve always maintained that you should put administrative controls in place early to prevent a major catastrophe and that if you do this; there is no need for cumbersome AD backup and restore solutions that are mentioned in Bothelho’s article. We’ve had a Recycle Bin built into our solution for years, so we agree with the approach Microsoft is taking by adding the Recycle Bin.

The Active Directory Recycle Bin in Windows Server 2008 R2 isn’t perfect. It’s got a long way to go, but I don’t see it ever evolving into a backup and restore tool. If you put the correct administrative controls in place upfront, I reckon you won’t find yourself too worried about Microsoft’s first go at the Recycle Bin or unnecessary backup and restore tools, because you won’t be spending much time in there.
